Traffic lights: The risk of COVID-19 contagion remains low in most European countries, the situation in Belgium has improved

Epidemiologists have updated the map which shows the degree of risk related to COVID-19 contagion, i.e. the traffic light system. The situation has improved in Belgium, which has been added to the green countries. Countries with a high risk of contagion still include Sweden, Portugal and Poland’s province of Silesia. The Ministry of Health recommends that Czech citizens research the development of the epidemiological situation in the given countries before travelling.

Citizens of Belgium can now travel to the Czech Republic without a negative test for COVID-19 and for tourism purposes. On the contrary, Sweden and Portugal are still among the countries with a high risk of contagion. Given the current epidemiological situation, the province of Silesia in the southern part of Poland bordering on the Moravian-Silesian region also remains in the red category.

Unlike the rest of Poland, the epidemiological situation in the province of Silesia is still unfavourable and has therefore been declared an area of high risk. “Although the situation in Silesia has improved slightly, the number of infections in the Moravian-Silesian region is on the rise, which is why we should be cautious about easing measures on the border. We will evaluate the epidemiological situation this week and decide about the continuation of special rules for this part of Poland accordingly. The purpose of the measures associated with red countries is primarily to protect the population and stop the spread of the epidemic from local hot spots to other areas,” said Health Minister Adam Vojtěch.

Citizens in yellow and red countries, pursuant to the protective measures of the Ministry of Health, can still only enter the Czech Republic in the cases defined by the said measure (e.g. for the purpose of performing work, for health reasons, in urgent extraordinary situations, when travelling to visit family members or partners, etc.). They still cannot enter the Czech Republic for the purpose of tourism. The Czech Republic accepts tourists from green countries.

According to the development of the COVID-19 disease, the EU states are divided into three levels depending on the situation regarding the development on COVID-19 disease and the restrictions imposed on those who would travel from them to the Czech Republic. Green identifies countries from which it is possible to return without restrictions for both Czech citizens and foreigners. Czechs can return from yellow countries without restrictions. Citizens and residents of EU+ countries in the yellow and red categories will still be subject to the conditions for entry defined by the protective measure of the Ministry of Health. When arriving from red countries, both foreigners and Czechs will have to present a negative test when returning.

The parameters and criteria of the traffic light system are based on the evaluation of epidemiological criteria in each country. The criterion is the number of infected persons per 100,000 inhabitants. Experts from the ranks of epidemiologists, Ministry of Health, regional public health authorities, Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs cooperate on the system. The traffic light system has been in operation since 15 June.

The list of countries will be updated at weekly intervals, always on Monday, depending on the current epidemiological situation.
